Rated 4 out of 5 by Teddy A unique addition, just be careful of small sizing
The piece would probably serve the same function as a shawl cardigan, but it's a little more interesting, more rugged, and less sit-around-the-fire (unless that fire is outdoors). The navy is so dark it looks black from a distance, but that's not really a detractor. One thing to be aware of is the size. I generally wear 36r in J. Crew blazers (I'm 6'1, 160lbs) because I really hate slack around the shoulders and under the arms (as you should too). But the 36r looked like a small sweater on me -- particularly the length over the waist was quite a bit shorter than a Ludlow blazer. I upped it to a 38r and it's perfect. This is a good piece because it can be worn constantly, taken off or kept on, unlike a cardigan which you may have to plan your day's wardrobe around to match. Again, it's unique and you may not know you need it until you wear it.

The product description doesn't match the product. It says 2 button closure but the picture has 3. Plus, there's a throat latch. It also does not appear to have any vents but the description says double. The description says that it's for warm weather however, it seems like it doubles as an cool-colder weather outer jacket. Also it would be noteworthy to point out that it has a shawl collar not a notch/peak lapel.

When I first purchased this piece, I wasn't sold on the fit or materials, and contemplated a return (especially given the price point), but it's grown on me since. The dark-nearly-black unlined heavy wool fabric and overall construction are definitely more on the cardigan side of the spectrum, but the sleeves are lined and it's cut like a ludlow sportcoat (high arm holes, slim fit). It's different than what you might expect from a jacket or sportcoat, almost an acquired taste, but I can guarantee it's going to be different than most things in your closet (or others). I went from wanting to return it to wanting to wear it once the weather gets a few degrees colder here in the Northeast. Be wary of a few mistakes in the description. Sleeve buttons are functional, for one, which would make tailoring more difficult, although I've been told this is an intentional design choice because the sleeves are meant to be rolled a bit with this style.

Lovely blazer. Light and unstructured. The fabric drapes over the body in a manner that is both dapper and comfortable. The three button closure is a welcome departure from the American two button orthodoxy that is all the rage.
Two major peeves: Buttons! Buttons! Buttons. They are always loose on J Crew shorts and jackets including a Ludlow cashmere coat and another topcoat I bought. This seems to be an endemic problem with J Crew tailoring. Please fix this!
Erroneous Description: This jacket does not have any vents. Please correct the description.

I was pleasantly surprised when the coat arrived to find that it is a Wallace & Barnes Product w/ a Ludlow cut. The W&B part was not advertised in the headline for the product and still isn't. The coat is exactly what I was hoping for, snug fit, warm and stylish. I love the shawl collar and don't mind that there aren't any vents in the back. You can dress up or down the coat and it fits well in an office environment as well as for a night on the town. Great product, highly recommended.
