This sweater has been a fundamental piece of my wardrobe for years. I last purchased in 2010 when the fiber content was 55% wool, 30% Nylon and 15 % cashmere. This fall it was time to replace a few, so I recently ordered several colors in my usual small. The pieces that arrived bore no semblance to the quality of the past. First of all, the feel is just nasty! No wonder. It's now 60% synthetic! (40% wool, 35% nylon and 25% viscose). The gauge of the knit is not as fine, and the fit is off. I've worn a small for years, but these hung on me. Additionally these slinky things do not take seem to take color evenly either. Am heartbroken, as these used to be so lovely and felt like cashmere! Now they look and feel like I could buy them at the same place I purchase my toilet paper. C'mon, J.Crew, this is awful. You're better than that!

I was really hopeful when I noticed these sweaters were now a 7 gauge knit, instead of the finer gauges of the last few years. Unfortunately, it's still the same fairly flimsy sweater, great for layerin -but be prepared to layer below as well because it's a more open-knit weave, making lighter colors -like ivory/snow-somewhat see-through. In previous yrs, the knit was at least tight enough to prevent. In yrs even more previous, J. Crew actually made heavier weight sweaters thick enough to layer OR wear alone. I still have some & love them. When will you make some like that,in a range of colors, again, J. C? The fabric is 40% wool & not at all itchy-quite soft &comfortable. The fit is slim w/out clinging in your ordinary size -I've always been XS & still am at5'5" & Audrey Hepburn's build. It's long enough to blousonne if you wish, but not too long to wear untucked. In a heavier weight/thicker/more tightly woven fabric -& w/ more wool & less synthetic-, this would be an A+ sweater.

This has been a favorite style of mine for years. I am treating the ones I have from 2010 like babies because they are still lovely and the yarn no way resembles what now passes for Cambridge Cables. So sad J Crew, you surely know this, so the decline must be somehow intentional, profit over quality at Crew again.

This sweater does not hold a candle to the Cambridge Cable of yore. The lack of cashmere in the blend and the concurrent increase of man-made materials have taken this cable from a cozy, cold-weather classic silhouette to a meh, it kind of keeps a person warm, around-the-house article of clothing. I highly doubt the current blend will hold up for 5+ years and I doubt it will stay in my wardrobe that long anyway.
Please bring back the old style, with the wool/cashmere/nylon blend. I will happily pay a little extra for the quality, fit and feel of the older Cambridge sweaters I need to replace.

I love the J.Crew cable crewneck sweater; it feels comfy worn with either a tank or collared button up. However, pilling began upon my first use.
