There’s a certain magic to clothes with character—so when we learned about Demi Moore’s collection of ’90s J.Crew, we had to see it for ourselves, and hear the stories behind each cherished piece. Our afternoon in NYC with Demi (and her pocket-size Chihuahua, Pilaf) was a walk down memory lane, a testament to enduring style and a master class in effortless ease…
Here, we’re sharing a few special excerpts from our interview with Demi, who is pictured in a mix of our Fall Collection and her own vintage J.Crew. Find the full story in our fall catalog and discover even more on the J.Crew app.

J.Crew: What are your favorite pieces from your vintage J.Crew collection?
Demi Moore: My rugged brown work boots with the orange laces—I just love and adore. I’ve had them since the ’90s. I also have the brogue version of them. Also my saddle shoes, because those always brought me a little bit of nostalgia for the ’50s. They have a childlike feel to them, and bridged a time period that was somewhat preppy, but also edgy. I have my moccasin boots, which I love. My big oversized sweater—I have a few. And what I also loved was that you could get the button-down henleys to go under it. I lived at least half of the time in Idaho, so it fit very well for me.

JC: Which decade are you most nostalgic for and why?
DM: There was something about the ’90s… It was an opportunity for liberation for that generation, and it feeds very much into the whole experience of being here with J.Crew. That ability to be free to be who you were, to be undone. Also a greater balance of masculine and feminine. There was a lot more pressure on perfection in the ’80s, and moving into the ’90s created an opportunity to find the beauty of imperfection.

JC: Do you have any special J.Crew memories or stories?
DM: First of all, J.Crew changed the landscape—not just in what it brought forward in clothing, but also in the access of how we discovered it. A catalog was not really considered chic. Before, you would have thought, “Oh, my grandmother might buy from that, but not me.” And [the J.Crew catalog] opened up a whole new world—a complete lifestyle. And it was the first place where I really saw men’s shapes being done for women, as opposed to this overly feminized version of something for a man that I had no interest in wearing. I like playing with the balance of masculine and feminine. That’s very much who I am.
