Product Details

Formerly known as the slim-straight, the 1040 fit is for guys who like their jeans cut with a classic, straight fit that's always in style. This pair is made from authentic selvedge cotton denim woven on 100-year-old narrow looms at the Kaihara mill, one of Japan's oldest and most renowned denim producers and is lightly rinsed for a softer feel than our rigid denim. How can you tell it's true selvedge? Turn up the cuffs and you'll see the signature stitching. Go behind the design of our denim washes.

1040 selvedge jean in Fairfax wash

1040 selvedge jean in Fairfax wash is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from J.Crew Jeans that Fit I splurged and got these selvedge jeans and couldn't be happier. The fit is slim enough without being ridiculously tight (actually a little loose in the waist) and the fit and finish are superb. I'm 5'10", 185lbs, and workout; I purchased 33Wx32L and easily could have worn 32Wx32L. Worth every penny. One small complaint, the jeans pictured don't show the back "leather" patch with the J.Crew logo embossed but the jeans shipped to me have back patch. It's a small matter but worth noting. I would absolutely purchase these again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fit, wash and craftsmanship are top-notch! Really pleased with my new 1040's. Have worn for a week and love 'em. The perfect fit for my athletic build. Slimmer in the lower leg than I thought they'd be, but I've been pleasantly surprised with how they look and feel. I really wanted this jean in raw, but since they don't make it I settled for the Fairfax wash (rinse). The wash is minimal, and unlike other rinsed jeans, these aren't overly wrinkled nor do they appear processed. So if settling for a washed jean, this one is well worth it. Like with all raw jeans, make sure you size down to accommodate stretching! I'm a 32 waist in all things J Crew, and the 31's in this jean fit me perfectly after a week of wear. I suspect they'll stretch a bit more, but there's no way I would have squeezed into a 30. Lastly, the craftsmanship of this jean is exceptional. Not sure if J Crew's carried this attention to detail over to their non-selvedge jeans, but what they've done with this one is about as good and authentic as it gets.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good Style, Poor Quality I purchased the 1040 selvedge jeans in Fairfax wash because it's near impossible to find selvedge jeans in off-the-rack lengths (everything else requires tailoring). The 1040s fit well and the Kaihara denim used in them is better quality and thicker than that of mass-market jeans from brands that start with L, but not as thick as other raw selvedge brands. This might be a good summer-weight jean. But I found that the stitching on these jeans is not up to par. I've had these jeans for less than a month, have worn them twice to the office and around town, and inexplicably last night, I discovered a 1.5 hole right along the outer seam (the selvedge side) on the right leg just below the knee. That's not an area that encounters much wear and tear, so I'm returning these to the store as defective. I'm disappointed because I thought I had found a source of quality, ready-to-wear denim. Even if it means that I'll need to get some tailoring done, I'm going back to the other raw selvedge brands.
