Social Responsibility

WASTE MINIMIZATION
Minimizing the waste that we generate and dispose of is important to us. Waste minimization will help us conserve natural resources; reduce emissions and impacts on landscapes and habitats; and lower costs. We are continually evaluating opportunities to minimize the generation of waste in our business.

REUSE AND RECYCLING

In addition to our focus on responsible packaging, we are committed to reusing and recycling whenever possible. We have several initiatives in place to support this commitment:

  • Whenever possible, we reuse cardboard boxes. In our Asheville distribution center, approximately one-third of outbound boxes packed at the distribution center are reused inbound boxes. Our stores are also instructed to reuse inbound boxes for outbound shipments.
  • When we are unable to reuse a box, it is recycled.

We aim to recycle in stores wherever services are available. At the majority of our stores, the landlord is responsible for waste management and recycling. Our aim is to partner with our landlords and other retailers to increase the recycling options for retail stores, thereby decreasing waste. To this end, we are active members in the partnership between the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), the Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association (PRSM) and the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) to promote energy, waste and cost reduction in our leased retail spaces. The partnership brings retail brands and developers together to identify shared challenges, promote leading practices and spur energy and waste savings in situations of mutual opportunity. See more at RILA.org/sustainability.

SUPPLY CHAIN
Through our Responsible Sourcing program, we’ve developed strong relationships with our key suppliers. In 2011, we trained our production team on the environmental impacts... READ MORE →
