Ludlow topcoat in Italian wool-cashmere

Ludlow topcoat in Italian wool-cashmere is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Luxurious, very slim fitting, poor quality control Overall, it's a nice coat. The material (95% wool, 5% cashmere) feels luxurious and the cut is flattering. But there are a few things a potential buyer might want to keep in mind: - As others have warned, the cut is extremely slim. I went up one from my usual suit size, from 38 to 40, and even so it's definitely a bit too tight over a thick sweater or suit jacket. With just a shirt on underneath, it fits snugly but comfortably. - It's pretty lightweight in the non-thinsulate version. Living in the UK, which has mild winters, I specifically wanted something not too warm, so it works for me. But if the temperatures went much below zero Celsius, I'd want a sweater or suit underneath. - There seems to be a problem with quality control. One of the sleeves isn't stitched properly, making part of the sleeve interior and lining pop out. I'll probably just take it to a tailor instead of shipping it back overseas, but it's an unexpected hassle for a reasonably expensive coat.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Well-made, but disappointing style and fit Pros: Coat seems well-made. Fabric feels soft but durable enough. Good weight to keep you warm. Cons: 1. The narrow lapel: Lapels look best when they are in balanced proportion to the width of the shoulders. J.Crew used to sell another style (the Aldridge) that had more proportionally-sized lapels and fit more generously overall. I don't know what size the coat is in the photo (my guess is 36 or 38) but it looks proportional to the shoulder width. However, the lapels on the 44R I ordered just look too narrow for the width of the shoulders. Bring back the Aldridge or make the lapels in proportion to the size of the shoulders! 2. Arms are too small: I don't have huge arms but even without a suit on, the arms feels very snug in this coat. 3. Inconsistent sizing: I first ordered this coat in 42S to replace my 40S Ludlow coat from last year since I'm a little bigger now. But when I tried on the 42S, it fit as snugly as the 40S from last year so I then ordered the 44R.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great warm winter coat This is extremely warm jacket. You don't need the thinsulate version at all, the normal version is very heavy and warm. It'd be nice if there were a button to secure the collar closed when turned up. Fit wise, it's even more flattering than in the pictures above. Really comes in on the waist, giving a great slim look. However, this is not sized like a normal top coat. If you wear it with a suit you'll definitely want to size up a bit. However, it fits very true to size as a coat on its own, with a slim waist. I'm a 38R or 39R normally, and this fits me great without a sweater, and snug but comfortably with. I'd definitely want a 40R if worn over a suit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Topcoat with problematic sizing Those of you who are familiar with J.Crew's topcoats already know that sizing is a major problem. If you intend to wear this without a blazer or suit jacket, then you might be okay, but that's unfortunate because this is designed to be worn as a topcoat. But compared to other manufacturers, the sizing runs a lot smaller. A 40, 41, or 42 should be what it would normally be, but it's not the case. I wear a 40R, and there is no way I could fit a suit jacket underneath their 40R topcoat. In fact I can't even wear a suit jacket under a 41R topcoat. Their 42--maybe. But then your waistline will grow significantly in size, and you'll have to tailor it. Nothing wrong with tailoring, but the point is that the topcoats don't fit as you would expect them to. That said, the quality of the materials are good, and if you can somehow work the sizing, you'll enjoy the coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Utility & Comfort I am 5"7 and 135 lbs. I purchased a 34/s and the fit feels very tailored, a bit on the slim side which is preferable for me. Consider ordering a size up if you plan on wearing this with a suit, layering up might cause some tightness. The material is surprisingly soft and warm. There are 5 pockets total, 3 being on the inside and reasonably sized. The biggest pocket would be the one on the inside, deep enough to fit a plus sized phone. This topcoat is definitely a staple for cold winters, as it offers a sharp look, warmth, and utility.
