How to care
for your cashmere
(and the planet)
Six easy tips from our sweater experts...HAND WASH
It saves water, energy and the trouble of fiddling with your washing machine. Just turn your sweater inside out and let it soak in cool, soapy water for about five minutes, then rinse.
SHAMPOO YOUR SWEATERS
Avoid harsh detergents and perfumes. Stick to something with glycerin and a low pH value, like baby shampoo. Also, try to limit the amount of soap you use—fewer suds means less rinsing, which means less water waste.
ROLL WITH IT
Always air-dry your cashmere...it’s better for your sweaters, plus it saves energy. Here’s our tried-and-true technique:
1. Lay cashmere flat to dry on a towel.
2. Starting at the end closest to you, roll the towel and cashmere up together to gently squeeze out any excess water.
3. Unroll and lay the cashmere on a new towel.
4. Let it air-dry completely to bring it back to its original shape.
RETURN TO THE FOLD
Cashmere sweaters should be folded instead of hung. Store them in a dark, preferably airtight spot with cedar chips and dried lavender to ward off moths and prevent mustiness.
STAY TRUE TO SIZE
Too-small sweaters are more likely to stretch out and pill after a few wears.
BRUSH IT OFF
Pilling from day-to-day wear is pretty much unavoidable, which is why we made a sweater comb. To remove excess pills, comb your cashmere in a single direction at a 25-degree angle.
