Tokyo-based nanamica (which means "house of the seven seas" in Japanese) shakes up the everyday with a fresh take on necessity. The brand launched in 2003, when Eiichiro Homma—with 18 years of technical outdoor clothing design experience under his belt—crossed paths with designer Takashi Imaki and discovered a shared vision to create things they'd never seen before, all constructed to withstand weather extremes (as well as the test of time). "We source the most advanced functional fabrics, then hone our designs down to the smallest details," says Homma. Take this jacket, for instance: Minimal yet stylish, it's made from a durable cotton-based Gore-Tex fabric with fully taped seams and is as completely waterproof (and breathable) as your favorite slicker. Finished with thoughtful touches like a slew of inside and outside pockets, it's the perfect meeting of high-tech and traditional craftsmanship to make sure it—and you—stand out from the masses.
