Rated 5 out of 5 by from Abingdon Messenger Bag / for college in DC Buying this bag for my son, I viewed a number of similar bags online and took a chance on ordering this one just based on the photograph. Figured I could return it if it didn't measure up in reality. It did measure up. The material is substantial, heavy cotton, or maybe they call it duck or canvas? In any case it's strong & solid. The leather straps and buckles are subdued and reduced in intensity, which to me is a good thing because they do not stand out. They blend with complete harmony to the olive material of the bag and appear not to be new, although of course they are. His Mac laptop fits in nicely, along with books, papers, and digital camera. I expect this to easily get him through the coming two years of graduate studies, and will probably look even better when it gets a few months of age on it. Passed on the monogram offer. Great understated bag, worth the price because of the nature of the mterials used and thought that went into the final design.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Only OK I love how light the bag is, along with the size that seems to hold everything. One major problem I have noticed is that it seems that the hand strap on the top of the bag is already wearing and looks like it may break soon. I have only had the back for about 3 weeks and already can see this wear.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Strap Woes Similar to other posters, I loved the style and purchased one of these bags. Unfortunately, after a few months of regular use (laptop and books, etc.), the stitching connecting the strap to the body of the bag suddenly gave way. As much as I love the looks, I can't recommend the bag, as the strap stitching doesn't stand up.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Strap stitching falling apart I bought this bag in Mar 2014 and in Nov 2014, the strap is failing. First, the good things: It looks good and I like the style. The pockets are MOSTLY functional (with exception of the two side pockets that are too small for most things). The canvas of the bag itself feels strong and tough though the back has turned a little blue/blackish from my clothing. However, as far as I can tell, it's never rubbed color off onto my clothes which is good. Bad: When I got it, I was a disappointed to see that the handle felt very flimsy. I considered returning but I don't usually carry around very heavy stuff (a laptop, tablet, notebook, student stuff, etc) I thought it would be ok. The handle continues to feel flimsy and I would never just hold my bag by the handle, but it hasn't failed me. The strap was disappointing. Comfortable enough but it's attached to the bag by not very much and that stitching has started to fall apart. It's a fine bag, but would not recommend for very heavy stuff.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Like the others... strap problems This is an otherwise stellar bag. Great canvas quality, roomy... really a nice product. However, the way they secure the strap (and the "handle" at the top) lacks strength. The bag is roomy, but with such an unsecured strap it feels as if you should only carry >10lbs at a time. Definitely feels like this bag was not meant to carry books. Within a year and a half of use, sure enough, the strap ripped free where the seam stitches the leather to the canvas. The bag still looks great, it just stinks that such a bad defect can mar such a useful and nice-looking bag. Without the strap problems, 5 stars easily. Unfortunately I can only give it two (and thats being generous). I will look into a company that offers lifetime services for defects on their bags, which unfortunately this product does not have.
