J. Crew has raised the bar by offering #59 Magazine. Less a magazine and more a future collectors piece, the bi-annual publication consists of intimate and world class black and white photography complimenting its text of all things culture for the cultured. Issue #10, which J. Crew quickly sold out of, shows a young Bridget Bardot dancing atop a cafe table while men gaze up in wonder. Inside, stunning shots of Bardot build up to the edition's gem: a special portfolio of Helmut Newton works selected by he and his wife, Alice Springs. The options to buy any issue are slim at best (including online). Upon hours of searching, I (barely) managed to procure the Bardot issue from Denmark, the magazine's country of origin. So, do yourself a favor and get it from J. Crew....because a 12"x16" b&w look at Newman or Hemingway, and those to follow, will at the very least add a touch of timeless yet modern class to your life. And they won't last long.

Rated 4 out of 5 by ArchStanton good but could be better...
I didn't know what to expect when I purchased #59 Magazine. Love black & white photography and good design so I figured I would give it a go. Unfortunately, there was some damage to the paper..most likely due to shipping. My biggest disappointment, and this is somewhat subjective, is it is an unbound magazine. Being large format and heavy paper, the only way to easily look at it is to have it on a table and flip the pages. Sitting and simply holding in your hands you are constantly realigning the pages to keep it from falling apart in your lap. I first thought it was a production error but then realized this is how it is produced. Had I not been caught by surprise by this maybe it wouldn't have been so bad. That said, sometimes function needs to trump design and I feel it would be a much better experience if it were bound. Regardless, a top quality publication worth spending an afternoon with.
