Rated 3 out of 5 by Doug Did not fit well...
I was excited about this piece but the fit was really off on me. I'm 6' 180lbs with a somewhat of an athletic build. I normally wear a M or L in J. Crew depending on the fit #slim or regular# so I ordered this in a M. It arrived today and the sleeves were very short but the body was really large... too large in my opinion. The body was so roomy that is flared out a lot at the bottom. To me it's all about the fit with clothing and even if I was layering, this piece would be far too big and the sleeves make it looks like it's a size too small. It's a shame because I like the look and the was very soft. I'll be returning it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Perepeteia Fits Like a Rain Poncho not a CPO Jacket
Despite consulting a size chart provided by J Crew and comparing it with jackets/shirt jackets I already own, the fit was off by a wide margin.
The medium fit well in the chest, but then flared out like a rain poncho, resulting in a fairly unflattering silhouette.
I wanted very badly for this garment to fit, but, unfortunately, I'll have to look elsewhere for a wool CPO Jacket.
Additional thoughts: it would be helpful if the weight of the wool was listed (example: 21 oz, etc).

I am a bit perplexed by the earlier reviews on this item. I purchased this item in medium at the store at West Farms. It fits great. I am 5"10 with 40" chest and 32" waist. This item simply does not flair out near the lower half. I just tried it on and looked in the mirror. I am super fussy about my clothes and this item fits up to my exacting standards.

Easy to wear with anything, comfortable, and does not restrict my movement. If you're like me and can sometimes go between medium or large, then get the medium, it fits very well, buttoned or unbuttoned. I usually have an issue with the arms being too long but again, just right when going with the medium. Great quality and keeps the chill out on cool days.

A couple of years ago I purchased a Wallace and Barnes CPO jacket (the buffalo plaid version) and it became a key player in my wardrobe. This year I decided to add this shirt/jacket to my lineup, and I'm glad that I did! The wool seems different than the previous version. It's more felt-ish, a little less scratchy, and actually has a bit of stretch to it, which adds to its comfort.
In terms of fit, I don't find it to divert from standard J. Crew sizing, and definitely don't see it fitting like a poncho or billowing out at the bottom. If anything, it does the opposite, with a clean, crisp fit. The black is also crisp and provides a clean, polished look.
I typically wear a J. Crew medium, which fits me on the snug side. This shirt fits very much the same way (like a shirt). If you intend to layer it or wear it as jacket, I'd definitely size up. Otherwise, wear it as a shirt and enjoy the feeling of being wrapped in durable, thick wool like a real mountain man!
