I bought this coat (navy) on short notice because I had a last minute trip to NYC last year and it was well worth it. I walked miles through single-digit weather in the middle of a blizzard and was kept warm by this coat.
I had to tailor the sleeves about 1" shorter, but I have short arms.
The style is classic yet updated for the modern man. No frills like epaulets or other junk.
I sized down because I like my clothes to fit a bit tighter rather than looser. I am 5'9", 165lbs with an athletic build and a size small gave me enough room to still wear a sweater underneath.
You don't need the coat with thinsulate if you're on the west coast, but I would definitely recommend thinsulate if you're on the east.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE J Crew. Ever since it was introduced to me a few months ago, I've been buying their stuff like crazy. It's a problem. Everything they have is great quality and I usually love their styles.
BUT, not this peacoat. It really looks great online, but I suggest you go in store to try it on. Quality is amazing, it's warm, but it makes you look FAT. Let me explain.
The top and middle of the peacoat is thin and is great, but imagine a Victorian style ladies' dress at the bottom. For some reason, the Peacoat "poofs" out and makes you look like you have a HUGE hip. I was really amazed at how bad it made me look (not that I'm saying I'm good looking in the first place). But anyways, try it on in store before you order online. I'll be returning mine :(.

Rated 4 out of 5 by MontanaBen Nice coat but runs small
I got this coat in mossy shadow. The color is a more saturated, emerald-like green than the greyish green shown in the product photo.
The overall quality is good. The wool is heavy and a little rough, which isn't a bad thing for outerwear. The cut and design are great. The extra length makes the coat a little dressier and more elegant than the average pea coat.
Unfortunately, unlike the previous reviewer, I find the coat runs small compared to my other J.Crew outerwear. I wear slim smalls and 36R in almost every brand, including J.Crew. Size small in this coat is almost unwearably tight. The shoulders and upper arms in particular are so constricting I can barely move my arms, even with just a shirt on underneath. I like slim-fitting garments but outerwear should leave a little room for layering. This pea coat doesn't. I might exchange for a medium.

This coat is fitted without being too tight and a little longer so it's great for cold days and nights. It's very versatile as well; you can dress it up with a shirt and tie or you can dress it down with a fitted sweatshirt and jeans. I'll definitely get a lot of use from this coat.

I bought a peacoat from j crew last year and absolutely love it. However, I feel slightly mislead by this years green peacoat. The one that I ordered online is much much darker than what is displayed in the online pictures. The peacoat is so dark, it is more of a grey than a green. I am sure however if you go with a different color, you won't be disappointed. As for my green, it will be returned this weekend :-(
