I ordered three of these in 32x30, two navy and one graphite. One of the blue chinos is over an inch longer than the other, and the graphite is somewhere in between.
Three pants in the exact same size, and three different lengths! Now I have to find a tailor. Ugh.

I've been looking for a pair of chinos for a while and I'd always had good luck with J. Crew products. One of the recent sales dropped the price on these to a point I was happy with. Firstly the fit is great; I'm a pretty active guy (i.e. I have muscular thighs) so it's been difficult to find slim pants that aren't constrictive. They also have a nice taper without seeming too skinny. The fabric is a good mid-weight twill that wears nicely. Overall, great pants. I highly recommend these.

Depending on the color, you may receive the Essential Chino in urban slim fit or 770--and yes, there is a difference. I ordered these in navy, smoked graphite, and british khaki. The navy and smoked graphite have 770 stitched on the inside of the pant whereas the british khaki says urban slim. The navy and smoked graphite pairs have a leg opening of 14.75 inches, which is what is advertised in the product description. The british khaki on the other hand have a leg opening of 15.5 inches, which is especially clear when you lay the pants on top of each other. It may seem like a small difference, but I find that the 770 fit has a cleaner, more modern silhouette.
Additionally, I'd like to point out that the pattern/color of the inside waistband is different from what the picture on the website shows for the smoked graphite and british khaki colors. It is not the red/navy/gold pattern but rather a blue striped pattern. Obviously this doesn't matter much, but it's yet another inconsistency.

I picked up a couple pairs of the essential chinos to wear on casual work days. They look nice enough to wear as work pants, but could also be dressed down for a casual look. I was contemplating on going between the urban slim and the 484 and I am glad I went with the urban slim. I think the fit is perfect, slimming but still has a professional look. I was also hesitant about going with a a non lightweight chino, as I live in the desert, but it hasn't seemed to be an issue. The only criticism is I thought the grey was a little too green compared to the online photo. The British khaki ended up being a little bit darker then the picture, but I think it is actually better in person. Overall excellent pair of pants to have in my rotation, very versatile.

I had been looking for a pair of pants that was slim but not skinny, loose but not baggy, and, most importantly, well fitting. Based on previous searches and purchases, I had believed that nothing of the kind existed. However, leave it to J. Crew to create the perfect pant. The pant fulfilled everything I was looking for and, upon first try-on, fit perfectly. From now on, I'm literally not going to buy any other type of pant.
