Wallace & Barnes fisherman jacket in Scottish waxed cotton

My husband LOVES this coat. Writing this to help with sizing. The L is perfect for him--I had been worried it would be too small as some L's are in J. Crew. An XL in this coat would be too big for him. For reference, in J. Crew recently he can wear Tall Large in knit tops, but if a top is super-fitted (or Oxford) the classic Large is too small for him. He wears 42 in coat jackets and has a long/big torso so 42L works well for him too. He can wear XL in J. Crew tees and sweaters (a bit baggy but will be perfect when they shrink), and classic L in the relaxed-fit rugby tops is perfect. The XL in this jacket would have been too big for him and would have looked weirdly over-baggy. The quality looks fine and the sale price was worth it since he loves it so much :) Can't comment on whether or how it's water-resistant as I have no idea.

Incredible jacket!! Stylish and so well made. Even comes with some fun patches you can sew on. Perfect for a fall day on the water or on the shore.

This jacket is all about details in a way that brings me back to the J. Crew from 10 years ago. The fit isn’t slim but a nice standard fit. Can easily fit two layers underneath it. While the waxed cotton doesn’t appear as waxy as the photo, it looks like it will achieve a similar patina with time based on the feel. Its coat is extremely effective as a running under the water test showed complete runoff on the sleeve. Now for the gritty details... The Scottish tag on the inside is great as well as a primaloft tag that isn’t shown in the model photos. Attaching a photo of all the incredible hang tags included that also have the three fishing patches. The flannel lining is nice, not the best yet soft, but the corduroy hood is top notch. The primaloft has a very subtle, micro ripstop pattern that elevates it oh so slightly. Sleeves fit a tad longer than a suit jacket, and the body falls a couple inches below the belt. On the heavy side but not overly hot. Fall through early spring piece.

Firstly the good: great silhouette, awesome novel and quirky pocket layout, insulated, and the hood-it seems so hard to find a waxed cotton coat that is insulated AND hooded. Fit is true to W&B Pieces, perfect for us sm-medium folks. Yellow color is rich and truly unique! The not so good: I’m a bit of a waxed cotton dork, so I was really excited when I saw this in store and noticed how dry the finish is: no sheen or stickiness at all. I think this is because the fabric is not actually waxed. Like, maybe they forgot or It was bad run. As others have noted-a slight drizzle will saturate and eventually soak the coat. Being the dork I am, I’ve applied a coat of wax & it’s done wonders!! 2) The zipper: why no two way zip? Given there is no snap/button flap if one needs to get to pants pockets or the lower pockets, one has to do a full unzip. 3) the cozy flannel lining looks great, but has friction when trying to layer over wool-not the end of the world, but at this price

Once you put it on, it feels like what you’d want in a parka: warmth, good movement, and coverage. * Note: These run big so order a size down! (Ideally to wear over thicker sweaters like fisherman and nordic sweaters. This is surely the reason for this jacket’s generosity in size.) These jackets are full of pockets so they’re definitely ready for field excursions and outdoor treks. The exterior fabric is weather ready and semi-waterproof too. I love the Scottish quality.

so far very happy with my purchase. first time with a waxed coat so we will have to see it that becomes an issue over time. havent tested the repellent aspect though i suspect it will be a mixed bag. im kind of between sizes but need the large because medium no longer captures my essence, if you will. perhaps i could have got away with the medium because there is some room to spare inside but as a sweater will be required on truly cold days im happy to have the extra space. the sleeves are a little long for me at 5'6," but not so much as to be a burden. so, very nice looking and weighted jacket. not at all bulky. had it out with a t-shirt in 30 degree weather today and other than my arms feeling some chill i was perfectly warm. great fall into winter jacket and enough on its own to take you to the edge of freezing temps but with room to spare to layer up on the cold. nyc winters arent quite as bitter as they once were and this should do for much of it.
