The Barn Jacket, inspired by the rugged layers traditionally worn by outdoorsmen and farmers, is known for its functional design, durable construction and ample pockets. Keeping this jacket (nearly) identical to our catalog-era design, we made slight updates for a faithful-but-fresh take on a time-tested classic. This special edition features a tartan exterior crafted from water-resistant waxed cotton canvas by Scotland's Halley Stevensons (est. 1864), a leader in fabric development for over 150 years.

September 17, 2025Gosh. I'm so sad. There are a couple of things about this Black Watch Barn Jacket that just didn't cut it for me. First of all, it is very stiff. I know it's waxed but it would take a lot of washing to get it to even be comfortable. Second, I'm a Scott so I was excited to get a Black Watch tartan jacket but this one is pretty dark and drab. When I was opening up the clear plastic bag it came in, I could have sworn I was mistakingly sent a black jacket. The first two pictures shown are more representative of the color. Pictures 5 and 6 must have a pretty bright light shining on the jacket. Third, the bottom half of the pockets are not sewn down so when you put your hands in them, they kind of pop out in a strange way. Fourth, the jacket is quite narrow. I wear a size 6 pant/28 waist and it is snug around my hips. Based on sizing in the customer reviews, I knew that extra small would be the size for me. I am a female, 5'8", about 140 lbs., and my chest is a 36". So not skinny but definitely not overweight. If I ordered up to a small, I would swim in this jacket. I'm sad to have to return it (especially since there is no JCrew anywhere near and I have to pay for return shipping).

Classic and Efficient
June 16, 2025I bought this as a birthday gift for my husband. He absolutely loved it. It is very rain proof and very stylish. I think he intends to wear it on days when it isn't rainy because of the appearance. Also it's not too heavy.

It's a nice-looking jacket
March 19, 2025The style of the jacket is cool and elegant, and the fact that it's water-resistant is great. I was definitely torn between a S and M size (I'm 5'10" and 170 lbs), and I think either would have worked, but would have leaned toward a M (my usual size) and roll up the sleeves a little since this is a barn jacket worn with a sweater or hoodie under it.
