Product Details

Our slimmest fit yet, for guys who like their jeans slim, not skinny. This pair is made from authentic selvedge cotton denim woven on 100-year-old narrow looms at the Kaihara mill, one of Japan's oldest and most renowned denim producers. How can you tell it's true selvedge? Turn up the cuffs and you'll see the signature stitching. For those not in the know, raw denim (also called "rigid" or "dry" denim) feels stiffer at first and then fades and distresses according to the individual wearer; in other words, it's as authentic as it gets. Go behind the design of our denim washes.

484 raw selvedge jean

484 raw selvedge jean is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Buy! This is my first raw denim jean and I must admit that I like it more than I imagined. It is well-designed and relatively understated. By that I mean, three is none of the overwhelming '50s feel with oversized leather patches etc. The fabric is stiff, almost kimono-like but sits very well on the body. The fit is also near perfect. Yes, the waist has expanded a little, but not to the extent some other reviewers made it out to be. That may well be six months down the road. But thus far, I don't feel the need of buying one size down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from all around great pair of jeans Picked up a pair of these in October and they're breaking in beautifully with almost daily wear. Contrast fades are gradually brightening up at the crease points, with a great depth of color on display in the surrounding areas. The fit is dead on, exactly what I was looking for... I'd call it almost skinny but not quite. They do stretch about an inch in the waist, as one should expect with raw denim, so go with a size that's snug off the rack and they'll gradually loosen up and become your own. Might choose a longer inseam than your usual as well, as they look great cuffed (thanks to the selvedge ID and contrast chain stitching at the hem), and their initial starchiness causes a strong accordion effect at the back of the knee that takes about half an inch off the length. All and all, quality construction, quality materials, and a smart cut add up to make these a great pair of jeans that only improve with wear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Raw denim so make sure to take care of them These pants are raw denim, so it's recommended that you take care of them differently from your other clothes to get the full value of the piece. Just search online for "raw denim care" for how to do so. Stitching is pretty standard for any denim in this price range. Fit is standard for J.Crew sizing. The jeans will shrink slightly after first wash. They feel very starchy at first, but after breaking them in for a couple weeks, they feel a lot better. One tip: I would avoid wearing white shoes with these jeans unless you want some of the indigo to stain the shoes (which I actually think looks pretty cool).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Smaller than comparable 484's I've been wearing 484's for several years and have bought multiple pairs and always loved the fit. Great slim fit for a straight leg jean without being too skinny. I purchased these raw selvedge in a 31x30 (my usual size) last month and they definitely run smaller than previous seasons (not just because they're raw, the dimensions are off). These things almost look painted on. I laid them flat against another pair of 484's and the diameter of the leg opening is almost an inch smaller which makes a big difference in overall fit. I've committed to breaking them in as they are a great looking pair of raw denim but I wouldn't classify these as slim fit, these are straight up skinny jeans. If it's not broke don't fix it!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the same 484 Raw Selvage from Last Year!!! I ordered these because the sales representative told me they would be the same as the old 484 raw selvage (originally priced ~45% north of these) - I needed to replace a pair of the originals so I tried them. They are a sad reproduction. First, they run smaller that the original -- with a narrower opening at the bottom. Second, the denim may be from the same mill (Kaihara) but it is NOT the same quality and does not have the same depth of color. Third, the overall quality of the jean is poor. As a matter of fact, the pair I received were torn on the button fly seam where the j.crew security tag is affixed. It doesn't instill a ton of confidence in quality and durability when they arrive with a tear on the seam..the fly no less..I wish J.Crew would stop messing with their tried and true designs -- bring back the original 484 raw selvage Kaihara even if it needs to be at a higher price point. These are a cheap, poorly made imitation of the original in an attempt to attract more buyers.
