Suiting Upwith Paul DallyAT ELECTRIC LADY STUDIOS
We caught up with New York–based musician Paul Dally at Electric Lady, the legendary
Greenwich Village studio founded by Jimi Hendrix. Known as the sonic backdrop for a
who’s-who list of musicians (Stevie Wonder, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Kiss, Erykah Badu,
Blondie, D’Angelo—just to name a few), the studio also set the mood for us to talk
personal style, music and creativity.

If I had one rule, it would be to have as much fun
as you can with style and not take yourself too
seriously. To me, style is a personal dialogue.

I love suiting. I think tailoring is so cool. We’re all
different shapes and sizes, and the fact that you can just
go to a dry cleaner and have your clothes tailored so that
they’re more of a personal reflection is really underrated.

Q&A
with Paul Dally
When did you start playing music?PD: I started writing songs when I was 12. My dad plays a lot of instruments and my mom loves playing music and dancing while we cook dinner. Music has always been a place of refuge and inspiration. I’ve tried to give it up professionally before, for pragmatic reasons, but I can’t help pursuing it.
What do you enjoy most about playing music?PD: I’ve played all over NYC for over a decade. I’m not the best musician or singer, but I like language a lot, and the way it exists in songs is different from other literary forms. The character that you can be in a song is malleable and evolves on its own. Songs, even if you wrote them, feel different over years. It feels like you’re creating this other entity and that invigorates the practice for me. It keeps me going.
How did it feel to be at Electric Lady Studios?PD: I’ll remember this shoot for my whole life because of this place. There’s a palpable energy when you arrive at the studio. You could argue that there is a purity in sound here. They treat the room in a way that the acoustics are just right, and to be in a space designed for that was very special.
How has your style changed over time?PD: I think painters, artists and writers in general have the best style. When I was young I was influenced by photos of musicians like Bob Dylan or The Clash and investigated that world. Now I wear a lot of cowboy clothing with more tailored and contemporary pieces. I found fashion through music then abandoned music for fashion, and now I’ve found a comfortable harmony between the two.

I enjoy playing with the complexity of American style. Thinking
about suiting and presentation as forms of self-respect, and as
contributions to the visual aesthetic of the world, is an exercise
in creativity that’s really fun.
