Rated 3 out of 5 by nycgirl Beautiful dress but ill-fitting
I bought this dress as a bridesmaid dress. I'll start by saying that this dress runs small, which I immediately realized because I already own another dress in Leavers Lace and this dress fit like it was nearly a size smaller. Talking to the bridal consultant confirmed it is an inch smaller in the hips/waist/bust, making it truly a size smaller than other J.Crew/Leavers Lace dresses. Order a size up.
Secondly, this dress is very ill fitting in the arm/armpit area. It's cut too small or something, and the crease between the arm/bust is very visible and it's not flattering at all. The cap sleeve actually makes it worse. Given that I have to wear this dress in a wedding (and can't return it) I actually opted to take it to a tailor to have the sleeves removed, as that minimized the effect.
The lace is beautiful quality and otherwise the fit of the dress is good, and the sheath is very flattering. But the unflattering (and unladylike) arm holes are a major minus for this dress.

First, let me start by saying this dress is adorable. I ordered it in Navy and the color is very pretty. I also love cap sleeves. It fit well through the bust and hit perfectly at my knee. (For reference, I'm 5'3" and 100 lbs. and ordered a 00.) There were two issues: 1) The darts which are on the lace at the waist didn't lay smoothly and they would sort of jut out, making me look thicker at the waist. No one needs anything extra at the waist. 2) Also, the spot where the dress meets the cap sleeve is odd. It's as if there's not enough material there or maybe the cap sleeve should be a little longer. If you look at the photos of the dress above, the last photo where they're showing the neckline shows what I'm talking about. If you look closely, you can see the model's skin sticking out between the bodice and cap sleeve, only it's more noticeable in reality than in that photo. Unfortunately, I will be returning this dress.

This dress is appropriate for formal winter events of all types. I'm 5'4, 112, and a 0 fit perfectly. No length alterations necessary. The best garment I have bought from J. Crew in years - well constructed and high quality.

This dress is beautiful - nice lace, well made and classic style. I ordered the ivory but the black would be stunning. I unfortunately had to return the dress - I'm 5' 10'' and the dress was just a bit too short on me (but many short dresses are).

When I tried this dress on, I was very happy with the neck/top silhouette (very pretty and face framing) and the back (low enough to add intrigue but not so low as to be wedding-inappropriate). The quality of the fabric and lace was also nice.
However, I was very disappointed with the cut around the waist - it made it look like I had a pouch. You can kind of tell once you look at the side view of the model - the darts go out, making it puffy below the waist.
For some, this may not be a big problem, but I am very petite and have an hourglass-ish shape so if I do not have definition at the waist I tend to look like a potato. Literally, there is enough give in the bottom that this could be a maternity dress. Some with different body shapes may appreciate this, but for mine it was terrible. I will not be wearing it to the wedding, I will be returning it.
