The Story

The oldest pearl necklace in existence was discovered in the tomb of an ancient Persian queen. In fact, pearls—which were once one of the most valuable natural objects on earth&emdash;are often associated with queens (in part because they were the only women who could afford them). According to legend, Cleopatra dissolved a priceless pearl in her wine before drinking it. Queen Anne Boleyn of England famously wore a single strand of pearls with a gold "B" pendant (before being beheaded by her husband the King, of course). In the early 20th century, pearls became more accessible—flappers wore long, layered strands and Hollywood screen sirens sported them on and off the red carpet before eventually becoming a staple of the sweater twinset. Pearls may no longer be priceless, but they definitely still look it.
