Smocked puff-sleeve dress in Black Watch tartan flannel

Soft fabric and easy dress to wear anytime. It runs a bit large as most pieces seem to be doing this last season. I am 5’8” 125lbs and the x-small was perfect.

The black watch tartan is understated but really cute. The material is more flannel like than the other dresses J Crew offers in this smocked design. Flowy bottom hides the extra serving and dessert. Highly recommended!

I already have and love this dress in Indigo Plaid, and just couldn't pass up snagging this print too. Everything I loved about the Indigo Plaid are here: the versatility, the coziness (as are the things I didn't like so much, like the just-a-touch-too-short sleeves and lack of pockets). The fabric on this is even softer and closer to a true flannel than the Indigo Plaid, which I love. Annoyingly, though, the sizing is quite different between the two dresses. I'm normally a size 0-2 (32C, 25" waist). The XS in the Indigo Plaid was snug on me, to the point where I could have comfortably sized up to an S. In the Black Watch Tartan however, the XS fits but is on the verge of being too loose, and I kind of wish I had gotten an XXS. So if you have this dress in other prints, don't assume that the fit will be the same.

Such a sweet dress, and I would love it except… The smocking stops a few inches below the waist, then the skirt poufs out. At least two more inches of smocking needed before the skirt. No waistline? Empire waist? Why, why? I would so love to have kept this dress! J Crew designers, please accommodate your customers who are taller with a naturally longer waist. People are not made of legs coming straight out of a chest! I have seen this similar design where the waist is imagined right below the chest in other dresses in my local J Crew store over the years; they are cute, yet they go straight to the sale rack. This is a design flaw considering most of your customers are older than teenagers.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I’m not sure why other reviewers are saying this is a like a nightgown. The smocked bodice and puff sleeves are so on trend. Yes, it’s very much inspired by other dresses that were designed as fancy sleepwear, but this is more than appropriate to wear out of the house. Wore this to an event with a nice pair of chunky loafers and got lots of compliments and questions about where I got it. I haven’t washed it yet, but my guess is that a gentle, darks-specific detergent will be helpful. This is the most comfortable dress I think I’ve ever owned. It is WARM, but not stuffy / heavy. My only wish is that it had pockets. It feels like it should. I’m a 2-4 and ordered a small. Could have fit an XS too, but the small is fine, even in the shoulders where smalls in this fit can be a bit overwhelming.
