A Stunning Disappointment
May 1, 2025I never write a review but felt compelled to on this dress. Make no mistake, this dress is absolutely gorgeous from the pale gold color with a hint a shine to the short, flirty fringe along the hemline. I purchased this dress on July 19, 2024, to wear for a special occasion in October of 2024; however, I opted to wear another dress from my closet. Fast forward to April 29, 2025, and I pull this dress from my closet to wear for the first time on my husband's birthday. Imagine my disappointment when I arrive home from dinner and there is a 4-inch hole down the front seam of my dress starting below the breast-line! One thread appears to have come loose and did this damage. Completely unacceptable. I am a size 4 and I purchased a size 4. Upon initial assessment of this dress, I thought I should have purchased a 2 due to the loose fit. I am not sure it can be repaired due to the fraying of the fabric underneath. The second disappointment is realizing a piece I purchased and assumed would be a part of my wardrobe for years to come probably will not. For me, clothes are an investment no matter the price. I have many vintage pieces of J. Crew since I have been shopping with you for over 30 years. I am truly disappointment.

Split right now the front seam on first wear
August 22, 2024As another reviewer has already said, my dress also split at the front seam the first time I wore it. I was so glad when I received it since it looked very polished and flowy while structured, at all but now it looks like it would be impossible to repair. Good thing I had a shawl at work to try to hide the hole on the way back home.

Very Polished, Very Demure ;-)
August 21, 2024I took a chance on this dress, knowing it's a final sale, yet offered at a price too good to pass (50 percent off marked down price, plus an additional 15 percent educator discount). I purchased the size 20, anticipating having it tailored since I've been a true J.Crew size 16 since 1998. To my delight, the dress (in the size 20) fits as if it was made for me. No alterations are needed, so I'd venture to say it runs small. For reference, I'm in my mid 40s, 6'1, measurements 44 (38 DDD bust), 34, 44. The dress fits nearly identical to the representation on the Website model, including in length, falling at my low calf. I think the dress's color of warm platinum is spot on, if you think of it in hair color terms, very close to BM paint in Philadelphia cream. Fully lined, the material, a twill with a slight sheen, the center seams (front and back) cap sleeves and fringe hem, elevate the dress's silhouette. In late August, I'll wear this to teach elementary school, with a past season stretch linen blend white blazer, with faux tortoise buttons, and past season brown leather woven loafers. I also plan to wear this to an al fresco birthday dinner on an East coast beach, in early September, with past season Sorrento ankle wrap sandals in faded pistachio or pale gold. Even my J.Crew cream and black two-tone leather espadrilles can be added for a more casual outing. I foresee having this dress, in rotation, for many summers, to come.
