Wallace & Barnes wool-cotton naval CPO shirt

Thick wool; deep beautiful navy. My son is about 5’8” and slender. The small fits perfectly with a fitted long-sleeve shirt underneath- nice long sleeves and torso. Very soft, but a bit scratchy (as it is wool).

I am a huge fan of this shirt.... I am in LA and this is the perfect shirt for layering. The fit and comfort is perfect and the cotton / wool blend really comes across in look and feel like 100% wool.

I loved this shirt as soon as I got it. However as soon as I put it on I became disappointed. Now I’ve been investing in wool clothes and fabrics for some years now after falling in love with wool. And I have even bought many other woolen pieces from JCrew and Wallace and Barnes and they have been amazing. And not itchy. I’ve also had my share of a wide range of itchy sweaters or shirts, some not too bad while others no itch at all. It really depends on the quality of the wool, the sheep it comes from, and the construction I guess. With that said this is the itchiest wool I have ever bought. It’s impossible for me to wear it without a liner shirt underneath. The only wool piece that forces me to do that. And it’s not even a 100% wool piece! So I’m not sure what happened with this one. It’s a great shirt and it’s warm, but the fact of the matter is you can buy 100% wool sweaters and shirts even right at JCrew for the same price and with no scratchiness. Maybe it will smooth over time.

This is a very nice "shirt jacket" with some weight to it. The wool feels a bit scratchy and stiff comparing to pure wool or higher wool content outerwear. But it looks great, and can be layered over another shirt and thin sweater. There is a cool history behind the naval CPO (chief petty officer) shirt. Runs big, get it one size down from your usual shirt size. Materials: 65% cotton / 35% wool COO: Made in Vietnam

The material feels like a nice wool camp blanket you would find at an army/navy surplus store. The details make it upscale -- like the classy buttons, including the extra button at the top latch. I only wear this on top of a long sleeve t-shirt or henley since it's a bit itchy. But that doesn't concern me since it's perfect for winter. And I love the deep navy color.

Every once in a while you come across - so well made, so brilliantly designed that it’s almost hard to imagine. Strong hardy, wool like cloth - dark blue, great touches and slightly big for size marked (but perfect for layering an undershirt). Well done J. Crew!
