Waxed canvas duffel bag

Great quality and plenty of space for my weekend trips

I got this for our weekend soccer tournaments. It's the proper size. The soft structure helps it pack easy. Also incredibly attractive.

I loved the canvas bags from J. Crew, but the quality is glaringly low on the newer iterations. This bag gets periodically retired and reintroduced with changes, usually to cut costs. Most of them have been acceptable, but this version is really unimpressive. The leather trim is now faux leather and used in far fewer places. The color of the bag is distinctly brown - it doesn’t match the golden tone of the picture or previous J. Crew canvas bags I’ve collected. The prominent logo on the outside is a downgrade. Overall, it’s really disappointing. If it at least kept the color and real leather trim, I might have kept it. But I’m returning this one sadly.

I was so happy to order this duffel bag. My husband ordered one a few years ago and I love it. This one has a few problems. First of all, it does not look like in the picture. It’s a honey color in the picture but in reality it’s light brown. Not as nice looking to me. Secondly, I knew it was waxed but I didn’t realize to what extent. It looks wet on the top. It also doesn’t have “leather” and little metal knobs on the bottom like my husband’s does. I’m not sure how well that will wear. Last, the whole thing just feels less solid and of good quality. I’m OK with it since it was on sale but I don’t love it. I can’t imagine paying full price.

I really wanted this bag to work but a main zipper fell off the very first time I used it. The reinforcement for handles & strap is all single stitched so I would be concerned on long term durability.

This is actually a very nice bag when it comes to the features and aesthetics. It has pockets galore; you'll have one for pretty much anything you need for a nice getaway. The materials are pretty sufficient; the canvas isn't too heavyweight, but still decent for the purpose, and the straps are solid as well. Where this bag might fall short for some people though is with the construction quality. Nearly all of the ones I came across had broken stitching in some areas. Also, you may notice inconsistent quality of the "leather" across the few spots where it's used as an accent piece. To be honest, I'm not sure if it's actual leather (would probably be in the description if it was), but it can still look nice if it's cut from a smooth piece. I would say check your local store to see if they carry it. If it's on sale at a good price, and it doesn't look like it was made as a rush job at 4:55pm on a Friday, go for it. If you order it online, you might get lucky.
