The shop made and sold shoes directly to its customers, becoming popular with skateboarders for their light weight and extra-grip soles. By the '70s, the brand name was shortened to Vans and became synonymous with laid-back Southern California style. The Authentic (originally called the #44 Deck Shoe) was the brand's first sneaker and its simple design has stood the test of time.
