AN OFF-DUTY STORY WITHJay FieldenWe visited the writer and entrepreneur’s midcentury modern home in Connecticut to see how a one-time suit guy (and Esquire editor in chief) handles WFH sweats.
“Do I wear sweatpants? Yes, but why can’t you wear them with an unstructured blazer?”
How his style is evolvingWhat have you been wearing in the past year?
“I’m giving my suits and ties a much-deserved vacation. But being comfortable doesn’t mean you have to be casual to the point of being a lazy old bore.”
What are you wearing that you never would have worn before?
“I started wearing what I call a cowboy ascot—an untied bandana inside the collar of my shirt. If you want to keep warm, it’ll do.”
Who has been the biggest influence on your style?
“Two women come to mind who really taught me a lot about what style really is: Grace Coddington and Nicoletta Santoro. Both of them are legendary, old-school magazine stylists—artists, actually.”
A weekend with Jay
“I play tennis in a league—it helps make the weekend feel like a weekend.”
ARTS DEPARTMENTWhat Jay is reading, watching and listening to…Books
“Philip Roth is one of my favorite writers, and I’m rereading American Pastoral, one of his greatest books.”
Music
“I listen to a lot of music, especially rock-country stuff like Townes Van Zandt, but there’s one song right now I used to listen to in high school that I’m obsessed with again—Warren Zevon’s ‘Werewolves of London.’”
TV
“One of the absolute most bingeable of bingeable series is Babylon Berlin. I’m fascinated by the Weimar period, the combination of decadence, sexy subterfuge and political revolution. The storyline, the acting and, of course, the clothes, are big time.”
Films
“Anything by the French director Jean-Pierre Melville, the master of film noir. Go through the whole oeuvre, you won’t regret it.”
Documentaries
“I got an early look at Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s Hemingway, a three-part series on PBS. It’s just fantastic.”
