My overarching thought process for all of these looks was, let’s just play with layering. An abundance of layering.

“Turning down your overalls adds an interesting shape and bit of toughness, without feeling too childlike. I tie the straps in front, underneath the flap, to keep them from dangling.”

The drawcords really cinch in the waist and give a good shape, which is rare for a puffer.

“I have this tendency to—when it’s raining or snowy or cold—put on a lot of light colors, like winter whites and this mint-green puffer.”
Ask a stylist:All about puffersBrie fields a few great questions from our @jcrew followers…
Q: Any rules for layering under a puffer?BW: Pick one thing to be your chunky, thick item. Don’t have a huge sweater and a really puffy jacket. A streamlined turtleneck and blazer with a bigger coat make sense. Watch the balance…
Q: How do I style a puffer with a skirt?BW: It depends on the length of the skirt. With a mini, I’d wear a cropped puffer with a cinched waist. With a skirt that ends past the knee, it’s cool to wear a longer-line puffer that hits closer to midthigh.
Q: Favorite go-with-everything puffer color that’s not black or navy?BW: It depends on what your neutrals are and how much color you already wear. I have a dull pink puffer that I wear with everything, but another great shade would be army green.
Q: What’s the most stylish way you’ve seen a puffer worn?BW: I really like puffers with trousers. It seems like an odd pairing, because puffers are always associated with being casual, but it looks cool—like an injection of youthfulness.
Q: Any outfit ideas for a chambray puffer?BW: I wouldn’t wear it with more denim. Maybe with trousers or some sort of fun print, to make it a little more elevated.
Q: How can I wear a puffer as part of my outfit, and not just something I take off as soon as I get to work?BW: A great option for inserting a puffer into your look that’s not necessarily outdoors is a vest. Styling it over a long-sleeve or button-down would be interesting. You could even belt it!

“I like to wear a puffer when I’m planning on doing things that require a good range of motion, like picking up laundry or moving about more. It keeps you cozy, but not weighed down.”

“This color palette feels very traditional and military, so I played with fun styling ideas like wearing two puffers together and tying the shoelaces around the pant leg to keep the cold air out.”
